A little bit about me, how I got here, and the story behind the name.
My Story
From a young age, the outdoors has always been where I feel most at home. I have some extremely fond memories of fishing with my father, walking the rivers and woods, and spending long days in the garden surrounded by wildlife and beautiful scenery.
After a long career in security, I spent a year working for a gardening company and quickly realised that this kind of work was what I truly enjoyed. However, a job opportunity came up at the local steelworks in Port Talbot that I couldn’t turn down, so I took it.
Fast forward 18 months and we were informed that part of the works was due to close, meaning redundancy was on the horizon. For many that would have been a moment of worry — for me, it was the push I needed. I got in contact with numerous organisations to seek help and advice on becoming self-employed, and after a lot of hard work and preparation, I can proudly say it was worth every bit of effort.
I officially left the steelworks in March 2025, and I haven’t looked back since. You Can Mow Your Own Way isn’t just a business to me — it’s something I’ve built from the ground up, and something I’m incredibly proud of every single day.
My Story
Hi, I'm Mathew
Hi, my name’s Mathew, I’m 39 years old from Swansea and the proud owner of You Can Mow Your Own Way.
Ever since a very young age I’ve always loved being outdoors. My parents have always enjoyed their garden, and my grandfather loved growing vegetables in his greenhouse and keeping his garden to a high standard — something that always fascinated me as a child.
Over the years I’ve taken a keen interest in all kinds of outdoor work, from helping my father build a stable and laying patios, to building raised beds, relaying lawns, full garden clearances with a mini digger, and even building garden ponds. I like to think I can turn my hand to most things, and since starting my business I believe my people skills, hard work, and determination have got me to where I am today.
I always go the extra mile to make sure every customer is more than happy, and I always strive to stand out from the rest — however big or small the job.
The Name
You can MOW your own way
After many months of thinking about business names, it was my wonderful wife Lucy — the real brains behind it all — who came up with You Can Mow Your Own Way, and I never looked back.
I regularly get customers getting in touch to say how much they love the name, and I honestly couldn’t be prouder to run a business I enjoy so much. It captures exactly what I’m about — doing things my way, to the highest standard, with a smile on my face.
